Case Study - Swan Song
In time for our ‘For the People Awards 2021’ we wanted to get in touch with last year’s winner and catch up to see how they’ve been since their win in 2020 and how the prize money has impacted their chosen charity. We spoke to Ben Buddy Slack who won the Highly Commended award in the Individual category.
Back in 2020, Ben said he was “incredibly flattered to be chosen for the Highly Commended award.” It meant a lot to him, and everyone involved with The Swan Song Project. ‘’We are very grateful to be recognised in the For the People awards and we are very appreciative of the support from Marsh Commercial.’’
The Swan Song Project helps people facing the end of their lives or dealing with a bereavement to write and record an original song. This process is deeply therapeutic and helps people to reflect on their lives, communicate their thoughts and feelings to loved ones in a lasting way and create happy memories in a difficult time. Many songs go on to be played at funerals and provide comfort to people through grief. The service is free and available to anyone facing the end of their own life (through terminal illness or otherwise) or dealing with a bereavement. Swan Song also runs a free virtual singing group and produces a podcast where songwriters discuss their writing processes and how music has helped them deal with bereavements.
The Highly Commended £1,000 prize money has enabled more people to leave a legacy in song. They have launched a virtual way of offering their service last year, which has allowed them to work with people all across the country.
Ben’s tip to this year’s entrants is, ‘’be honest and open when talking about your project and don’t worry about speaking to the panel, they are a really nice bunch.’’
