Why do you need specialist IT consultants insurance?

If you’re a self employed IT professional, IT contractor or run a small IT/tech business, the work you do is highly complex and you face unique challenges and risks that are very different to those in another industry. It may often be project driven, client facing and delivered under a written contract, which means one coding error, missed deadline or hardware fault could lead to client claims or reputational damage. Specialist business insurance can help protect you against the financial implications of those risks.

A simple solution for complex work

Our tailored insurance policy is built for the realities of tech work, helping to protect your income, reputation and contracts. You choose the core cover that suits your role and add only the extras you need, helping keep premiums appropriate for small tech businesses and IT freelancers.

What insurance does an IT consultant, contractor or freelancer need?

It will vary depending on the type of work you do, but typically you may need:

Professional indemnity insurance for IT contractors

This covers the legal and compensation costs you may have to pay if a client makes a claim against you. It can help if a client alleges professional negligence, an error in your work, or advice that leads to financial loss. Professional indemnity cover is often important where you provide services under contract, and some clients may ask for PI cover before you start work. Depending on the terms, it may also include retroactive cover for past work.

Public liability insurance for IT contractors

This covers you for the cost of a claim arising from an injury caused or property damage caused by you or your employees. It can be relevant if you visit client sites for meetings, installations or client trips.

Employers liability (EL)

This is compulsory by law for most businesses, and employers liability insurance is a legal requirement in many cases. It provides cover if a worker suffers an injury or an illness they believe is your fault.

Other covers

You may also wish to consider cyber liability insurance, which protects your business from cyber-criminal activity such as hacking and cyber extortion, along with the legal and reputational fall-out caused from a data breach.

You may also want personal accident insurance, which can pay a lump sum if a named person suffers a serious accidental injury. This can be helpful if your business depends on a small number of key people, including in self employment or when working through another business.
