Some of the best UK road trips and renowned driving routes

 July 06, 2021

Whilst for many the adventure of driving some of the world’s most iconic and breath-taking roads might be a distant daydream due to current travel restrictions, let’s not forget the beautiful scenery our own isles have to offer. We can’t guarantee the same weather as a drive down the Amalfi Coast or Australia’s Great Ocean Road, but our round-up still offers plenty of twists, turns and unforgettable vistas.

Choosing the motor vehicle to enjoy your sojourn is an important one, you want to be able to drive in comfort, but also experience the thrill and style a premium performance or classic car can bring to your journey. With a road trip, the journey is just as important as the destination itself, so we’ve spoken to our friend Harvey Cammell, Bonhams’ Global Director of Valuations and Private Collections to find out what cars he thinks would help make the perfect road trip.

It doesn’t get more iconic than a classic Aston Martin DB5 convertible1, not only coveted by the A-list in its day but famously synonymous with ‘007, James Bond’. A dreamy motor companion for any road trip. But if you’re looking for something more modern, how about a Bentley Continental GTZ? Or, if your passion lies with vintage classics, could you handle a 1931 Bugatti Type 49 Open Tourer?

Where to explore on your road trip

From Northern Ireland’s mystical Giant’s Causeway to the pretty and quaint chocolate box villages of the Cotswolds, we’ve rounded up our top road trips across the United Kingdom (UK). Showcasing something for everyone, from a 500-mile Scottish adventure to a rollercoaster 23-mile excursion through Welsh countryside. With over 200,000 miles of roads ready to explore across the UK2, it’s time to get those engines running and see what adventures there are in store.

1. North Coast 500, Scotland

It’s hard to beat this stunningly scenic circular route across 500 miles of the beautiful Scottish Highlands, taking in shimmering lochs, fairy-tale castles and heather-covered peaks. Starting from Inverness, enjoy exploring historical ruins, deserted beaches, small fishing villages and whisky distilleries along this incredible road trip, soaking in some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery.

2. The Atlantic Highway, England

Connecting Somerset with Cornwall, this grandly named stretch of road doesn’t disappoint, with unsurprisingly breath-taking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Starting in the Devonshire town of Barnstaple, take time to explore the photogenic destinations en route and slow the pace with hikes, surfing lessons or delicious seafood suppers before reaching the beach town of Newquay.

3. The Causeway Coastal Route, Northern Ireland

Another sensational coastal drive located across the water in Northern Ireland, The Causeway Coastal Route takes in a number of must-see sights, from bustling Belfast to Londonderry. Explore the rugged coastline, ancient archaeological sites, iconic golf courses, and pretty harbour villages on this fabulous driving route.

4. Black Mountain Pass, Wales

Whilst not an extensive route, what the Black Mountain Pass lacks in distance, its epic mountain roads certainly make up for in excitement. A challenging 23-mile stretch of road with hairpin turns, weaving through the Brecon Beacons connecting Llandovery with Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen. Sweep through the valleys and enjoy spectacular scenery from 1,600ft.

5. Snake Pass, England

Another short section of road, but one that every motor enthusiast should drive. Located in the Peak District between Manchester and Sheffield, as the name suggests, expect snug corners and twisting tarmac with elevation changes to test your gear transitions. A thrilling drive for any keen motorist, just don’t forget to admire the superb views of the surrounding rolling moorland.

6. Lake District, England

Whilst not a designated driving route, it would be amiss not to include ‘Wordsworth country’. Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site and enjoy some of England’s most picturesque roads. Complete a circular route taking in all of the natural beauty of the National Park or split your journey into smaller routes. The Keswick to Kendal route is a special one, with must-see stops along the way including Grasmere and the famous Lake Windermere.

7. Norfolk Coast, England

Unsurprisingly for an island nation, our coastline delivers some of the most scenic driving routes. The roads that hug close to Norfolk’s coastline provide a sublime vista and a perfect backdrop for leisurely cruising. From King’s Lynn to Great Yarmouth, take in sweeping golden beaches and spectacular nature reserves. An area of outstanding natural beauty, this drive is for motor and nature enthusiasts alike.

8. The Cotswolds, England

It might be hard to find anywhere that is more quintessentially English than the Cotswolds, with verdant rolling countryside and pretty honey-coloured villages. Enjoy exploring miles of winding country lanes, from the market town of Chipping Campden to the historic city of Bath. Take time to discover charming country pubs, medieval churches, antique shops and beautiful country gardens.
